Cognitive Modelling for Decision Support in Naval Command & Control
نویسنده
چکیده
Traditionally, a decision support system is built to help a broad range of users in their decision making. However, there are some domains such as air traffic control, the nuclear industry, and certain military tasks, where it is critical that particular individuals make correct judgements for the safety of themselves and others. For such people, it is possible that a decision support system tailored to their own individual way of working can help them in their decision making tasks. Decision makers in such environments can be viewed as using naturalistic decision making methods, and cognitive models of such people performing a simulated electronic warfare task have been implemented using the Soar architecture, for inclusion in a decision support system. This task was chosen because it displays the characteristics most relevant to naturalistic decision making, namely rapid decision making in complex, real-time environments. For decision making in the unstructured and dynamic real world, this .approach of employing cognitive models of the users, embedded in a decision support system, appears to hold much promise to help them in this task.

Argumentation-based Decision Support in Naval Command & Control
Threat Evaluation and Weapons Assignment (TEWA), a process which is at the heart of tactical naval Command & Control (C2) process, comprises a number of operations that must be performed under time and resource constraints. This article discusses the challenges of decision making in this context, and more particularly the critical issue of target engagement, and shows how this process can be su...
متن کاملModelling situation awareness for Context-aware Decision Support
Situation awareness modelling is popularly used in the command and control domain for situation assessment and decision support. However, situation models in real-world applications are typically complex and not easy to use. This paper presents a Context-aware Decision Support (CaDS) system, which consists of a situation model for shared situation awareness modelling and a group of entity agent...
متن کامل"Task-Managed" Watchstanding: Providing Decision Support for Multi-Task Naval Operations
Watchstanding in shipboard command centers requires U.S. Navy crews to complete timecritical and externally paced task assignments in an accurate and timely manner. Requirements for optimized crew sizes in future ships are driving system designers toward human–computer interface designs that mitigate task and workload demands in a multi-task work environment. The multi-task mission is character...
متن کاملBeyond Behavior: Making Cognitive Systems Engineering Part of Navy Acquisition
Although much of the work that Navy operators undertake is cognitive in nature, involving tasks such as sensemaking, planning, decision making, and attention management, most of the human factors work done in Navy systems acquisition is task-based, or behavioral in nature. Neither the JCIDS process (per DAU Guidebook) nor the Navy Instruction 5000.2 incorporates processes for cognitive engineer...
متن کاملModeling Support of Effects-Based Operations in War Games
The Effects Based Operations (EBO) concept is based on relating actions in a battle plan to overall effects. A prototype system called CAESAR II/EB has been developed to assist in analyzing Courses of Action (COAs) for Effects-Based Operations and evaluating them in terms of the probability of achieving the desired effects. The tool supports both static and dynamic evaluation of COAs by integra...
